thumbnailAnime has long been the domain of horror, fantasy and science fiction (and porno); with animation, everything is seemingly possible, and at a better cost than live action. Scenarist and animator Satoshi Kon (1963) set himself apart from the very beginning. It's true that he gave perfect blue (1997; seen at AFFF in 2003) a giallo-esque structure for his story about a Japanese pop idol, but he was essentially analyzing the world and social isolation of his animated lead. tokyo godfathers is, after the nostalgic millennium actress (2001), Kon's second full-blooded anime drama, a magical account of three homeless characters who, in a snow covered Tokyo on Christmas Eve, find a baby in the garbage. When the alcoholic Gin, the transvestite Hana and the girl Miyuki, themselves in a disheartening situation, are confronted with the foundling, their lives - for a while - change. Like the South Korean my beautiful girl, mari or the European co-production corto maltese: la cour secrète des arcanes, tokyo godfathers' content and visuals are artistically far above most animation. You could say that Kon has made an - let's just throw the loaded term out there - adult animation film. And 'adult' doesn't mean, in this case, a freakshow of lubricated genitalia and muscle-cracking copulation techniques, but a drama about people who live in cold reality and experience character development. The animation itself? It'll be sure to deliver some ooh's and aah's. Anime with vision - don't miss it.
