Retrospective Wes Craven
A standard feature of the Festival of the Fantastic Film / The Weekend of
Terror is a special programme devoted to a director whose contributions
to genre cinema have a distinct signature.
After 'auteurs' like David Cronenberg, George Romero and Dario Argento we
this year pay hommage to Wes Craven (*1949), creator of the pre-eminent
horror icon of the Eighties, Freddy Krueger.
Craven's debut in the genre, The Last House on the Left, dates back
to 1972, but it took him twelve years to break through to a large(r) audience.
In A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) Craven introduced the world to
Freddy Krueger, an executed child murderer who lives on in the dreams of
a group of teenagers andthat way is more lethal than ever. A Nightmare
on Elm Street marked the first occasion on which Craven translated his
life-long obsession with dreams to the silver screen.
In later work, such as The Serpent and the Rainbow, Shocker and the
presumably last part of the Freddy-cycle, Wes Craven's New Nightmare,
the division between dream and reality was explored again and again. Craven's
obsession can be measured by his claim that his screenplays are born at
night... in his dreams.
